The reigning Formula E champion, Pascal Wehrlein wrapped up his second title at a nail-biting season finale in London, The German driver continues with Porsche to chase down more titles in GEN4.

Early Career

Born in Germany in 1994, the German-Mauritian driver started his racing career in karts in 2003, quickly rising through the ranks in his homeland. His transition to open wheel racing came in 2010, with his debut in the ADAC Formel Masters series - where he would win the championship in his second season.

Progressing to the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2012, Wehrlein finished second in the championship that same year to Dani Juncadella. The following year, Wehrlein made his debut in the DTM at the age of 18 with Mucke Motorsport before switching to rival team HWA in 2014. Here, he became the youngest driver in the series history to claim pole position and win a race on route to 8th in the championship with 46 points to his name. That same year, it was announced that the German driver would act as a reserve driver for the Mercedes-AMG Formula One squad.

In 2015, Wehrlein clinched the DTM championship title with five podiums, one fastest lap and two wins, becoming (at the time) the youngest driver to win the German touring car championship.

Formula 1

His DTM performance put the German on the radar for Formula 1, where he made his debut with Manor Racing in 2016. Wehrlein scored his and Manor's only point of the season at the Austrian Grand Prix with a tenth-place finish.

With Manor folding in early 2017, Wehrlein moved to Sauber Formula One team where he scored the team's only points of the season before moving back to the DTM the following year to drive for HWA, where he finished 8th in the championship.

Formula E | 2018-20

On the first day of Formula E pre-season testing in Valencia for the 2018/19 season, Mahindra Racing announced that Wehrlein would partner with Jerome d'Ambrosio for the Indian team's championship campaign.

Over the course of the season, the German driver racked up one podium finish and came painfully close to clinching his maiden victory in Mexico City. Showing plenty of promise, Wehrlein was signed for another season with the Indian manufacturer.

His 2019/20 season marked a transitionary, turbulent chapter in his electric racing career. Wehrlein started the year with consistent points scoring potential, securing a best finish of fourth-place in Santiago. However, after the season was abruptly halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Wehrlein made the decision to part ways with Mahindra with immediate effect ahead of an upcoming move to Porsche for the following season.

Formula E | 2020-26

For 2020/21, Wehrlein made the move to TAG Heuer Porsche. It was a story of missed opportunities, with infringements costing him and the team its first Formula E win in Puebla. Without the double DSQ, the German squad would have been troubling the sharp end of the standings. As it was, Wehrlein was forced to settle for 11th in the Drivers’ Championship.

Heading into his fourth season in the all-electric championship, all eyes were on Wehrlein to secure his and the legendary German marque's first win in the series. Round 3 would be a story of redemption for Wehrlein. The team-driver pairing dominated the proceedings with a clear drive, toying with the rest of the field as they ran a perfectly judged energy management strategy for a commanding first 1-2. This was to be the highlight of their season, as technical issues took Wehrlein out of the lead around the fabled streets of Monaco.

The beginning of the GEN3 era saw Wehrlein continue with Porsche for a third campaign, this time faced with the challenge of an all-new car and a brand new teammate in Antonio Felix da Costa.

The 2022/23 season started off in style for the German driver, claiming a second-place finish in the opening race of the year, before following it up with victories in the double-header in Diriyah in the next two rounds. This form saw him storm to the top of the table, but both Wehrlein and Da Costa were unable to maintain their early season pace and struggled to finish on the podium in the second part of the season. As a result, Wehrlein only claimed one further victory, in Jakarta, as his title challenge fell away.

The following season saw the half-Mauritian driver return with more consistency and determination than ever. Setting the pace early, Wehrlein converted pole position into a victory at the season-opening Mexico City E-Prix. He remained a constant force at the front of the grid throughout the season, scoring a second victory at the Misano E-Prix, alongside a podium finish in São Paulo and consistent points finishes.

Entering the London E-Prix double-header finale in a tight, three-way title battle against Jaguar rivals Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy, Wehrlein claimed victory in Round 15 before securing a crucial second-place finish in the dramatic final race. With three race wins, five podiums, and three pole positions across the season, Wehrlein accumulated 198 points to edge out Evans by six points and claim his first Formula E Drivers' Championship.

He entered the 2024/25 season as the defending champion and mounted a strong title defense highlighted by a commanding victory at the Miami E-Prix, alongside pole positions in São Paulo and Mexico City. Wehrlein stayed in mathematical contention deep into the second half of the season, ultimately finishing third in the drivers' standings.

For the final campaign of the GEN3 era, Wehrlein was once again fighting at the front of the championship battle. Setting the tone with a pole in São Paulo and a victory in Jeddah, Wehrlein delivered consistent podiums across the year. In the London finale, despite a chaotic, scoreless last race, his title rivals failed to capitalise, sealing Wehrlein's second Drivers' crown.

For GEN4, Wehrlein continues with the Porsche outfit.
